I really enjoyed marshalling the morning but had to leave early as one of my party was not feeling well and got soaking cold and wet. He was not even playing!

The rain was quite spectacular to say the least! Did not bother me though.

Real shame I missed the afternoon as I believe the weather got a lot better?

Bloody great day! Loved it!

The weather was a downside in the morning, but at least the sun came in the afternoon!

Nice play from both yellow and reds, especialy enjoyed using my newly aquired Sig P226, best bit was i got two kills while in a cupboard haha!

As said, great play from all and nice senarios.

Thanks all for showing.

Had an awesome day despite hiding upstairs in a d building during the first game because of the rain :P

Really enjoyed the game with the 3 metal boxes. Me and jack spotted harrison and another lad running past the embassy with what looked like a box. We bust out off the bunker and fought our way through about 10 reds and into the embassy running after him, only to find out it was just a plastic box they had used to trick us. Nice one haha.

And maccy, i think that was me who you got in the cubbard if it was in your base. Me and jack got into their twice. We came back and got you though, i told you we would :P and we also did a sneak little grab and run with an objective out of your base to win the game. Epic gameplay from the yellows with that one.

Really enjoyed the day, especially the modified VIP game escorting a specialist character. I think things broke down a little bit around the role of the engineer round on round but I think this is partly down to the weather making people's brains soggy :P

Some constructive criticism:

  • When the weather is pants, is it not possible to hold the safety brief in the medblock when numbers allow? The reason I suggest this that often the safety brief takes longer than it should while we are getting progressively soaked - those of us that don't have to go back to the safe zone after the safety brief then have to wait 10+ (because no one ever takes less than the given time) minutes get soaked even more. I might be in the minority here and granted it doesn't rain that often - I just don't have an affinity for getting cold and wet before I've even done anything game related/don't have to be. I shall make sure that I pack a tactical cagool in future :P

  • "Have you got a plan?" was the last thing I heard about 30 seconds before game on being called on the first round. I can't help thinking the start of the day was a bit rushed - on red team we were all told where to go so I was a bit perplexed to find that as part of the demo squad we literally had no support moving round the back of the pub when the pub, D2 and D1 should have been maintained as a defended area. From a strategic point of view, that game should have been a piece of cake, if we'd had 2 minutes to half organise.

Somewhat goes back to my point that due to being kept in cold/rain, everyone just wants to go off and blast each other rather than think about how to secure objectives.

I personally wasn't feeling the love for the longer games in the afternoon - longer games in general do work well at Anzio but perhaps Jamie's naming us the 'Sons of Lethargy' was somewhat prophetic. Slightly shorter, fast strike game types import a sense of urgency and should keep your brain/body working, stopping you from switching off - don't get me wrong I saw a lot of people having fun playing but I also saw a lot of stuff where people can't have been thinking properly.

Overall, did I enjoy the day? Yes, immensely. Could it have been better? Yes, but shit happens and it was just the right mix of wind/rain to put the smallest of downers on things.

Was nice to put a few faces to forum names/chat during the bring&buy too.

And in case people don't scroll as far as the videos thread, here is my rather sweary mary video from the day:

Excellent day, very well marshalled and excellent attitude from all players. I had very little experience of bad form from anyone, and 99% of which was clearly from the heat of the moment and nothing was deliberate. The whole weekend was probably the best airsoft experience I've seen in terms of player attitude and for that I thank everyone involved.

The game play was nicely varied, with plenty of intense fire fights and lots of fun moments. A great day and it's nice to be truly back at Anzio after a bit of exploring of other skirmish sites.

Nice video Dan, very cool. In the last section with you guys grabbing the engineer I remember arriving down to that area via the bunker, and setting up with my LSW in the window overlooking that side entrance you used and just hosing the yellows as they came back en mass from their regen. You lot must have been keeping them very busy as not a single one returned fire at me despite the shower of bbs coming their way.

EDIT - just for clarity I wasn't firing into their regen as that's just not cool (not that I'd even have the range even if I did), but just into the mini car park at the side of D5.

What an epic day!

Jamie asked me at the end of the night missions what I thought of the whole day and I said it was crap!! :D Let me tell you why: As I had to go home and take my wench out on Sunday and try and act normal again.... I wanted to stay over at play on Sunday and make a full weekend of it...bugger you real life!!

In all seriousness what a great day Saturday was, yes the weather was crap but you can only get so wet before you forget how wet you are, then when the games start you completely forget you are on the edge of hypothermia :D

Another fantastic day dispite getting piss wet through in the first game and freezing my bollocks off for most of the morning!

Great play from pretty much everyone there. The only incident of foul play was when a yellow team member started to shout abuse at a guy next to me after he shot him once he'd shouted hit! To be fair to my team mate, the guy was in the building opposite us ( d4, we were in d3 ) and was walking around with his hand in the air. But if the obscenities weren't bad enough, the fact that he then decided to then start firing back out of anger after said team mate told him to watch his mouth and calm, just shows that unfortunately some PRATS! Do get through the net. However, said prat soon bled out when said team mate ( dazza ) took out his marshals vest , slipped it on and ran down the stairs after him pmsl.

Nice video dan, was trying to explain to my mate how about 20 reds were squashed up on the stair well, to afraid to move untill someone came in screaming for everyone to f***ing move lol. Still cant put a face to the name, however, the voice is now logged in. Stilll feel sorry for the first guy through the opening at the top of the srairs, took about 4 hits to the side and back of the head........So glad i didnt turn left lol.

Cheers folks.

First time at FAO Anzio. Thankfully, one of the team lives very close by so it won’t be the last.

Having had time to reflect on the game, the initial impression of a great day has only improved.

I’ve been skirmishing at organised sites now, since the end of ’99 - ’00, so from time to time tend to get jaded, and even a little complacent with Airsoft. Last Saturday’s skirmish at Anzio was a much needed reminder of what I enjoy about the game and the people who play it.

Getting the bad out of the way first, the weather was a bit of a nightmare, and I have to confess that the first half of the day was hard going to keep spirits up with the rain making discerning indirect hits difficult, and vision more so. Even wearing hearing protection my ears were still freezing, haha! Once the weather cleared up I think everyone in our bunch started having a much better day and really getting into it.

Bibby’s brief set a solid foundation for the day, with scenarios keeping things interesting. I do agree it may be wise to move longer briefings under cover, if numbers / facilities allow it – I don’t know the site though.

Sportsmanship on the day was excellent, with people taking hits in good humour on both sides. This is something that I’ve found greatly lacking recently at other sites. Possibly the close proximity at Anzio lets you see good sportsmanship a little easier, but I’d like to think the players and marshalling team have more to do with it, notably the firm stance on ‘cheat-calling’.

Some top notch play was notable on a couple of counts. I’m afraid I don’t have names, but on our side (Yellow); the chap with the vest full of Pyro and only a pistol did a Stirling job both as a medic and attacking / clearing buildings, always with a smile on his face. On red; the guy who snuck in behind us, took out a few of the team with a pistol / knife, only to be taken out through the window by his own team, seconds before taking out the rest of the room.

Only real down side for the day for me was having the zip on my fleece shot to bits in a close in encounter, but better than my real teeth eh ^_^

I’m sure it’s old hat to you guys now to hear this, but the site is excellent. It gets over the typical ‘tactical queuing to be shot’, stacking up on the one entrance to a building, with so many ways in to each building / room / floor – which is my major problem with urban airsoft, but is not present at Anzio. Likewise, the rule of single only indoors not only makes for safer play, but also keeps movement around the building flowing, by removing constant suppression of all entrances.

The ability to dash between buildings relatively quickly was also much appreciated (we’re all a bit old now), though it would be excellent to have some additional impromptu cover (barrels etc) in the more open approaches to the buildings, where there’s no vegetation / solid cover.

Anyway, thanks again guys. It has been a while since I’ve felt motivated to write anything after a skirmish, and honestly a while since I had such a good lark in airsoft.

*snip*

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why I keep coming back. We are all here to have a good time and to hear something like this said in feedback both sums up my feelings for First and Only and also serves as a constant reminder of what a brilliant bunch of people we get to play with and against (that of course includes the marshalls - which goes without saying).

mindz_i - I don't know if you frequent any other First and Only sites but I have to say that in my experience the attitude and atmosphere you encountered at Anzio isn't just limited to Anzio itself - I've found the same at every F&O site I've been to, and that makes me damn proud to be on one of the F&O teams and a part of such a brilliant sport.

You just can't get this kind of experience anywhere else.

Also this was the 1st day i got to use my shiny BFG and you should have seen the faces on the guys in the room i used it on when a team mate kicked the door in and i threw the BFG in. 4 kills and another with my pistol when a group of yellows came up to the window of the room and shot at us

Another blinder of a day! Thanks to all concerned :)

Managed to pull the team together (including Mindz_i above) from far-flung locations across the UK for this one after singing the praises to them for a while now and they all had a cracking time.

As Mindz mentioned, we've been playing at sites across the UK for thirteen years now and First and Only have always been amongst the forefront of the game. Why? Simply put, it's the quality of marshalling.

The low key yet effective marshalling, coupled with a no nonsense approach permeates F and O, and this is exemplified perfectly at Anzio. The quiet way in which folk who were fiddling with guns / chatting during the safety brief were dealt with set the tone nicely. The random chronoing during the day was a confidence-inspiring incident. How many sites threaten this yet never carry it out?

Gamesmanship on both sides was spectacular as far as we could see and players were friendly and strangely free of cliquishness that some sites' local teams seem to adopt. The weather was manky but seemed to do little to dampen spirits which is a testament to the quality of players on site on saturday.

Ran my new dynatec impact grenade for the first time. All kinds of good fun!

+1 on a couple of comments: safety brief indoors if the weather is poo - maybe the embassy? And where are the photos? :)

I'm so glad to have such an awesome site on my doorstep, coupled with top-notch players and marshalling team!
